Leaves Breathe aims to educate others on our favourite gardening tips so that gardening can become more accessible beyond our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Through this step-by-step guide on transplanting stock, you should be able to easily replicate some of the actions you would have gained insight to during one of our volunteer gardening days in London.

1. Dig out plant from position A.

2. Cut down the number of leaves, at least by 1/3.
This step is especially important in hot weather as the leaves are more susceptible to temperature damage as the leaves transpire, i.e., lose water. Using secateurs, you can reduce the number of leaves on the plant and thus the amount of water that is lost from the plant.

3. Place the plant in a prepared hole.

You may wish to add a base or top dressing of plant food. This is optional.

4. Firm the soil around the plant with your hands.

This is to get rid of some of the air tunnels. Otherwise, the water goes straight through these air tunnels past the roots. This is called ‘heeling in’.

5. Water well.

Once you have completed all of these steps, you should have successfully transplanted stock! This 5-step process is designed to be easily repeated and replicated within a domestic or community setting.
